Radiation

This position is disputed by some scientists, including Professor Denis Henshaw of Bristol University.
He questions the conclusions of the latest study, published in the British Journal of Cancer.
“Country studies have not had enough statistical power to see an increase of childhood leukaemia near power lines,” he told BBC News Online.
“The pooled analysis of country studies has clearly shown a doubling of child leukaemia at levels well below what you get under power lines.”
He believes melatonin plays a role in protecting the body against damage that can lead to leukaemia and may be disrupted by strong magnetic fields.
“The study carried out by Dr Lloyd and colleagues did not involve melatonin,” said Professor Henshaw. “Therefore, while publication of this study is to be welcomed, failure to observe an effect of magnetic fields on these cells may be unsurprising.”
The latest study used blood cells from a donor to test the effect of magnetic fields on the normal repair process.
The researchers blasted cells with radiation to create the sort of damage that leads to cancer.
They found that the cells repaired themselves naturally, even if they were exposed to stronger magnetic fields than those found in British homes.

Surprising’ results

Children born or living near the power lines were 1.7 times more likely to contract leukaemia than those in the control group, the research found.
Some studies have already shown an association between some types of electromagnetic fields and increased childhood leukaemia.
Research author Dr Gerald Draper said other research suggested power lines might account for 20 to 30 of 500 cases of childhood leukaemia each year.
But, he said, his work indicated a far smaller number of cases were affected.
The findings were “surprising” and prompted further research, he added.
The Department of Health said it would not comment on the findings until Dr Draper submitted his final report.
Children living under high-voltage power lines could run double the risk of getting cancer, new research reportedly suggests.
Those living within 100 metres of the cables are more likely to suffer from leukaemia, the study indicates.
The Childhood Cancer Research Group at Oxford University studied 70,000 children under 15 for the Department of Health report, half of whom had cancer.
The seven-year study is reported in the Times and the Independent newspapers.
The research looked at the prevalence of high-voltage power cables near children’s homes.

In recent weeks the media regulator Ofcom has begun an inquiry into premium-rate phone lines on TV contests following allegations that some shows have misled callers.
Ofcom has had two complaints about the Joseph choirs competition but as websites are outside its purview it had referred them back to the BBC.
In online forums, comments include: “My respect for the BBC has plummeted beyond belief!” and “The whole thing has been one disaster after another, only hope they apologise on the TV show to the thousands of kids who feel let down.”
A BBC spokesperson said that as well as increasing the website’s capacity to cope with the huge amount of hits it was getting, the deadline had been extended – it ended at 1500BST on Friday 25 May.
“Extras measures were also added on the website including a clarification of how to rate the choirs and a registration system to assist in managing the process.
“Once the verification process has been completed the top twenty, who go forward for judging by the panel, will be announced on Thursday 31 May.”
Joseph was written as a school musical and remains enormously popular with children.
It was first performed in 1968 but it is estimated that there are still nearly 500 school or amateur productions each year in the UK alone.

A new TV talent search to find the next stars of the musical Oliver! will begin in the new year, the BBC has announced.
I’d Do Anything will be looking to find an actress for the role of Nancy and three young actors who will take turns as Oliver in the Lionel Bart musical.
Graham Norton will again host the show after leading previous searches for the stars of Joseph and The Sound of Music.
Auditions will begin in early 2008 and the programme will be broadcast on BBC One later in the year.
Norton will be joined by Andrew Lloyd Webber for the programme along with fellow impresario Cameron Mackintosh.
Oliver! is a much-loved British musical so we’re sure the show will unite families and melt hearts across the UK as we watch some of Britain’s best new talent take
centre stage.”
Based on the Charles Dickens book, Oliver! was made into a film in 1968, starring Mark Lester in the lead role.
Earlier this year, Lee Mead won the TV search to become the lead in the West End production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
In 2006, former call centre worker Connie Fisher won How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? to take the lead in Lloyd Webber’s revival of The Sound of Music.

Battle lines drawn against pylons

December 4th, 2009 Posted 9:07 pm

On one side were the Jacobite forces, 10,000 troops led by the Earl of Mar, and on the other, the government forces under the Duke of Argyll, with about half that
number.
The battle was sparked when the Duke mobilised his forces from Stirling to block the road south to England, where Mar had decided to move his forces.
Despite their greater numbers, the rebels were eventually forced to retreat to Perth and the MacRaes, sited on the left flank of the Jacobite army, were left exposed
and, with no cavalry support, were effectively slaughtered.
Now the Clan MacRae Society claims the site of the battle, which has been marked with a memorial, is under threat from plans by Scottish and Southern Energy to build a
137-mile power transmission line of pylons from Beauly, near Inverness, to Denny, near Falkirk.
The company has promised to make a fully informed decision on the route of the line and Mr McRae has echoed calls for a public inquiry into the proposals.
“We’re not concerned with the pylon line itself, but its going to run directly through Sheriffmuir,” he said.
“The pylons will require foundations and that will mean digging huge holes right across the battlefield.
Many of the men who died here still lie here after almost 300 years and we don’t think it’s acceptable that they should be disturbed at this time for this reason.”
Mr McRae said battlefields in Scotland were not given the same level of protection as in England, a policy he hopes will also change.
About 100 MacRaes died in the battle, a considerable number for the small clan, which had its homeland in Kintail, Perthshire.

Magnificent scenery

The inquiry was announced after a large number of objections to the plans.
SSE said the development was needed in order to transfer green energy from proposed projects in the north of Scotland.
The Ramblers’ Association Scotland, John Muir Trust, National Trust for Scotland and Association for the Protection of Rural Scotland are combining resources to object to this proposal.
Davie Black, wild land campaigner for the Ramblers’ Association, said: “We are concerned about the effect this power line will have on the magnificent scenery of the Scottish Highlands.”
John Muir Trust policy officer Helen McDade added: “This inquiry needs to look at the big picture, the context within which this proposal lies.”
Meanwhile, Stirling Council has agreed to joint legal representation with Highland Council, Perth and Kinross Council and the Cairngorm National Park at the pre-inquiry stage.
Other meetings will take place on 25, 27 and 31 October in Inverness, Perth and Stirling.
The line from the Highlands to Central Scotland, proposed by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), would see 600 pylons built on a 137-mile route.
Meetings in Aviemore, Inverness, Perth and Stirling will set out how the inquiry proper will progress.
The inquiry, called by the Scottish Executive, will be held early 2007.
The pre-inquiry meetings also offer an opportunity for the developer, councils and pressure groups to outline their cases for or against the proposal.
The line would run from Beauly near Inverness to Denny near Falkirk, passing through the Cairngorm National Park and close to the Wallace monument in Stirling.
